Indigo Skirt, a free pattern by Mood Sewciety
What’s good Lovies?! I finally had a chance to get some sewing done this week…..YAY!!!!! I’ve been working on a secret sewing project, but I can’t share just yet, so this is my first “official” make for the month of November. Lately, I’ve been seeing these gorgeous silky, satiny, midi length, bias cut slip skirts (that was a mouthful) EVERYWHERE…….EVERYWHERE and I’m obsessed. Now, I know these beauties aren’t a “new” trend by any stretch, but they have never really spoken to me until now. Not only are they speaking to me, honey, they are screaming my name! I fell down the Pinterest rabbit hole and pinned all the things bias cut and swishy……because swishy, duh.
Anywho, after scouring the “innanets”, I found a free pattern that I thought would give me the vibe I was going for and would be a pretty quick and easy first run. Mood Fabrics has all things sewing, including a billion and 3 free patterns to grab while you are purchasing all the other goodies they have to offer. Enter the Indigo skirt pattern *CUE THE ANGEL CHORUS*. This pattern features a fluted bias cut skirt with an elastic waist. It is literally one pattern piece that you cut twice, one for the front and one for the back. Seems easy enough, right? Well, if you are well seasoned in the slaying of slippery, finicky fabric, this project will be a breeze. If you are like me and have been able to avoid working with satin like the plague that it is, you may have to grab a drink….or two.
What seemed to help my process along was to use a rotary cutter and good pattern weights for the cutting. I tried pins to keep it from slipping every which way, but I didn’t like the small pokes they left in the fabric.
I also had to get real friendly with my iron when it came to the creating the elastic channel and the bottom hem. Although this is probably one of the easiest sewing projects to do with only 4 seams to sew, you MUST take the slow approach or risk it running away from you….literally.
Deets about this project:
*Walmart “satin” value fashion fabric, vibrant orangey gold, $1.20/yd
*Indigo Skirt pattern by Mood Sewciety
*I cut the front panel of the skirt in the size 12/14 and the back panel in the size 16/18….to accommodate the booty
*I shortened the pattern by about 5-6 inches, I’m 5’2”- there was no lengthen/shorten line so I just took it from the bottom. It still ended up pretty long and I will be wearing it very high waisted.
I will absolutely be making more of these!!! The next one will definitely have a nice little slit up the thigh so I can give the girls what they want. (Me, I’m the girls….) I have already purchased the chocolate brown satin for that project, so be on the lookout for it! I hope you love this skirt as much as I do. Check ya later!
Love, Kisha J
